Merch Grade arises from the production of structural framing grades. Structural grades are graded mainly by machine which tests the timber for it’s deflection. Timber which does not meet structural grade is referred to as Merch Grade. The grading of structural grade pine does not consider the visual appearance of the timber. Merch Grade can therefore vary in appearance and can come from timber cut anywhere on the log. Pith is allowed and there are no restrictions on knot size or the number of defects. Good appearance timber can be found in this grade however low grade is included and buyers should expect some variation in Merch Grade product. It is used in the manufacturing of pallets and packaging as well as furniture and some structural applications.
